GIRP
March 28, 2011 7:41 AM Subscribe
Newly released GIRP is to rock climbing what QWOP was to running. (previously. also previously.) The games' creator, Bennet Foddy, appears to be a Doctor of Philosophy, focusing on biomedical ethics. His list of recent publications demonstrates an engagement with addiction studies. Proceed with caution. (via)
Bennet Foddy appears to be under the mistaken impression that people have three hands.

It breaks my FINGERS. It's like Keyboard Twister.

I get reliably up to about 10m when the melancholy piano tones start playing, but then I get stuck because there's nothing I can reach and swinging the guy over doesn't result in success, it results in splashing.

This is a lot more playable than QWOP. Dude's pretty sadistic though. Good for a laugh. I got up a few levels.

Wait, what the hell? QWOP is designed by Bennett Foddy? Jesus, that's bizarre! I was just reading stuff by Foddy the other day. I had no idea he made QWOP!
This happened to me before when I realized that the first good crossword app in the app store (2-across) was coded by Eliza Block, also a philosopher.

To answer the first question "why did you make it so hard?": I don't consider it all that hard. I can get halfway to the finish line, which is a hell of a lot further than I can get in Defender, or Pacman, or Pitfall, or just about any other score-based game. Your problem is the framing effect: you expect it to be easy to run 100m. But you probably don't expect it to be easy to clear a score-attack style game!
Yea, uh, if you can't tell the difference between climbing a hill and running into a brick wall... well, I guess you have an idea for version 3.

I love this guy.
QWOP by the way strikes me as a philosophical game, like the simulator I heard about that was meant to test whether you could learn to "intuitively" navigate in 4 dimensions. (Incidentally also the premise of Miegakure.)
I was also a big fan of Too Many Ninjas, a simple but absorbing Bfod game where you can neither move, nor shoot, but only stick out your sword in one of four directions (up and down being mostly useless).

This game is great. It's like Typing of the Dead meets Crazy Climber. I've often thought Crazy Climber was due for a remake, actually, with twin sticks being the norm for console controllers now it'd be easy. GIRP plays a lot more fiddly, though, it feels like there's seldom more than one or two moves you can make in any position.

I saw it was made by the guy who made QWOP, and immediately looked at my keyboard to see how the hell GIRP was going to be a convenient control scheme.

I just ran 57.7 on QWOP on my second try. I'm having a hard time getting into a rock climbing game where you don't use your legs or hand match. My brain doesn't work that way.

Mothergirper! I was playing this game in Firefox 4 on OSX for like 20 minutes before I saw this note:
NOTE: THERE IS A BUG IN FIREFOX 4 FOR OSX WHICH PREVENTS SHIFT AND CONTROL FROM WORKING, UNTIL THEY FIX IT USE THE MOUSE BUTTON OR SAFARI OR CHROME.
I'm dangling from "M" thinking, "The clenching, it does nothing!"

I find this surprisingly useful as a climbing simulator.
A campusing deep water solo climbing simulator.
There is the thought process associated with changing hands on a one-hand hold, there's crossing one arm under/over the other, there are dynamic movements.
Shift works as if you place a foot to reach further.
Just add better user interaction and a stamina-countdown for each arm.
