Pole dancing for Jesus - "Best Shape of your Life holds Pole Fitness for Jesus classes on the second Sunday of each month, for ladies who take in their church pamphlets. The classes are free. The instructor's reason? She doesn't want to make a profit on God's day." (ABC 13, KTRK-TV Houston, TX).

This is about fitness
...which is why I'm wearing bootie shorts and five inch heels.
Part of me is all "go, them! do what you want and have fun!" and the other part is grumpy because they exclude anyone who doesn't bring in proof of attending church. So weird.

I think the dissonance there is sort of fascinating, yeah. I honestly can't really say how I feel about it, but it's definitely not a simple "LOLXIAN" thing. And someone said to me "combining musical, religious, and sexual ecstasy is a lot older than Christianity". Interesting.

So many great quotes:

"God gives us these bodies and they are suppose to be our temples and we are suppose to take care of them and that's what we are doing," instructor Crystal Dean said.I figured these are the sorts of things that journalists secretly think about writing, but never do.
Booth was raised in church. Now, the pole is her temple.
"Some guy came up with his Bible and we were in class and he thumped on the door and was waving his Bible," Dean said. "People who want to sit there and judge it, you know, like well that is sacrilegious or you know. That doesn't make you a good Christian when you judge other people."Woot to that.
There are those who just can't get past the stigma. And the Lord said, dancing is OK by me, but not too much booty shaking, and booty shaking in booty shorts is right out.
"In Gods eyes, it wouldn't be attractive," said 19-year-old Eric Purgason.
Purgason's family runs Lord and Nature, a Christian gift shop neighboring the Christian pole dancers.

"It would be easier for a camel to slip through the eye of a needle than for a booty-shaking pole-dancer to get into heaven"

"In Gods eyes, it wouldn't be attractive," said 19-year-old Eric Purgason.
Purgason then said, "Clearly, I'm not God."
But I have heard that pole dancing is a fantastic exercise. And if your body is your temple, who cares how you keep it in shape? I thought that wearing five inch heels was to make the work-out harder. As for the shorts, they don't look that shocking, from what I've seen worn around this college town.

So now I need to go looking for nun porn combined with Christian pole dancing. For research purposes only, you understand.

Yeah, of all the things to appropriate from mainstream culture, I can't decide whether choosing pole dancing is surprisingly open-minded or surprisingly depressing. Also the quote you selected about "That doesn't make you a good Christian when you judge other people" is great, and yet I wonder if those saying it are judging women who are doing the same thing for money or - how do they wrap their minds around that? Do they honestly not care? That would be refreshing.

Pole dancing classes are not even remotely cause for raising an eyebrow these days, are they? A friend of mine teaches one just because she dances for a living (not as a stripper), it's a good workout, the moves are interesting, etc.
(When she told her dad she's going to be teaching pole dancing, the exchange was: "Will you be wearing clothes?" "...um, yes Dad, yes I will be wearing clothes.")

In my town a Christian group has renamed yoga "stretching for Christ" or some such and renamed all the poses to reflect biblical quotes/characters. There's sacrilege in turning to the body and the breath for physical health and mental clarity, so instead of the instructor reminding people during poses to breathe and be aware of tension in their shoulders, for instance, the instructor reads bible verses and has people focus on that. My son says "well at least they're doing yoga" but I find it really upsetting because it's appropriating another culture/religion/centuries-long practice AND losing the benefits in the transition!
