News of the Screws is screwed

Murdoch has shut down the News of the World. This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said. This follows the latest phone-hacking scandal, previously on MeFi, and further revelations since. One can only imagine the shit that was flying before this decision was made, and what is still to be revealed.

Holy fuck. I figured it would drag on for weeks before they got to that point.

This is damage control. They are hoping no-one keeps digging.

Where will the readers who paid their money for it all these years go. They obviously were able to read the stories then without caring.
Without the Guardian this would have probably never appeared. Hopefully they do not go under although their numbers from last week do not look that healthy.

unSane: "This is damage control. They are hoping no-one keeps digging."
And even if they do, Murdoch will be able to say, "I did the right thing as quickly as possible."

Good for Britain.
America, could you now focus on the tumorous growth that is FOX news?

How long will they wait before announcing that The Sun will become a 7 day paper?

What will this mean for NOTW readers? They'll have to reach over to buy the Sunday Sun. It means absolutely nothing for Murdoch. papers will be dead in ten years, it's all about the bskyb deal.

Having watch this unfold, and been appalled but not surprised by the antics occurring behind the scenes in tabloid journalism, it is difficult not feel a level of utter joy that the Murdoch empire is on the backfoot, however temporarily.
That joy evaporates when a moment is spent thinking about the lives of the people (the parents of murdered children, family of dead soldiers etc) who have been mercilessly toyed with.

Correct Brian Lux, The Sunday Sun can not be far away. "SUNday" "Sun on Sunday" "SUNday Funday"

Yeah, blatantly damage control - the authorization and interest in phone hacking goes way up the food chain. I wouldn't be surprised if Rupert or James were involved, and if they were, I don't think they'll be able to both avoid jail or keep control of their empire - they'll have to chose one over the other.

Rubbish. We still need criminal charges against the people responsible, including Rebekah Brooks, who shouldn't keep her current job. Also, all Murdoch business interests should be boycotted. Closing NOTW is only good business sense since that rag's fortunes are bound to go downhill after this horrific scandal.

Ah, of course. That's what he's trying to salvage here. The timing on this was horrible with regards to that deal, with even some conservatives questioning whether the deal was a good idea under the circumstances.
