Comrade Grossman

Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman has been adapted for radio.
The Stalinist regime, on which the book focuses it's critical eye as it documents the battle of Stalingrad, attempted to censor the book, telling Grossman "that his novel could not be published for two or three hundred years". Although Grossman did not live to see the publication of his manuscript, microfilm copies survived and were smuggled out of the Soviet Union leading to publication in the 1980s. Life and Fate is has been referred to as one of the 20th centuries greatest books.
Grossman, who spent much of the second world war working as a eminent journalist, risks being recast by the current Russian government's reappraisal of Stalin in a favourable light.
The background and impact of this semi-autobiographical novel have recently been discussed on Start The Week.
