Freaky patterns in the Chinese Desert

So what the heck are these strange patterns in the Chinese Desert? Turns out they're calibration patterns for Chinese spy satellites. And it turns out that the US has done the same kind of thing.

That last link is a trap shooting range, not a calibration target. Unless the satellite operator is shooting at clay pigeons, I suppose...
