You can search the database for free, which is wonderful. Viewing the actual pages costs money.

Freely searchable, but somewhat pricy otherwise. Still, since my college doesn't subscribe to the Gale British newspapers database (WAAAAH), I'll need to pony up some pounds.

Yep, you have to pay to see the newspapers. Even taxpayers, who fund the British Library to £142 million, still have to pay for the privilege. Far from being a great piece of news for the library, this has generated a lot of discontent.
