Breaking the silence around racial abuse - While the following narratives are personal -— thus exposing my vulnerability -— I believe sharing them is necessary in order to help break the silence around racial abuse. And to help explain why so many people of color are “obsessed” with the murder of Trayvon Martin.

This post was deleted for the following reason: The current Trayvon Martin thread is still active, and while it's definitely a developing situation, new posts need to be framed a lot better than this to stay up. -- restless_nomad

It's not really hard for anyone who's paying attention to understand why people of color wouldn't trust the police. The other day I (a white person) was waiting for a ride late at night outside a train station where a bored cop was standing around. Every time people (all black in this instance) were hanging around the vicinity for more than about thirty seconds, the cop walked over and started bellowing at them to "move along", without even any attempt at polite engagement. On public sidewalks! I, not at my least sketchy-looking (behoodied, appropriately enough, and rather cracked-out on sleeplessness), did not receive a word from the policeman.

I thought hispanics were also considered people of color.
