although the layout of the Top 20 Musicians of All Time..list is typical annoying multi-page, it is TOTALLY worth going through for the awesome surprise at #1 (a long time crush of mine!!!!)

That Top Ten Metal article is embarrassing. Four albums from after 1995, one of which is Municipal fucking Waste? Sure does live up to the "...For People Who Don't Know Shit About Metal" standard.

Metal, Rap and Jazz are considered 'intimidating' music genres?

They should do it properly Nothing after 1986.

I don't know about these non-genres that they are trying to explain terribly, but this sentence in their edm list is a jaw-dropper.
The trick to understanding drum 'n' bass is to realize that it's not really meant for dancing.

Um... Shoegaze is not an obscure genre.
And "rapegaze," while an admirable attempt at clickbait, is not a genre at all.

Heh. Any discussion of any list-like article is going to turn into "X but not Y?"... There is a lot if X but not Y here.

Oh god with the rape gaze nonsense again.
Also holy shit does the term "apocalyptic folk" take me back to being nineteen with the depression and the long hair and the constantly-updated LiveJournal.

It's not the genres that are intimidating, it's the dismissive self-appointed curators of certain genres that are intimidating.

As someone who regularly has to look up genres on Wikipedia when perusing the Craigslist musicians section, I found the Obscure Genres bit somewhat helpful. Realistically, of course, if I have to look up a genre that person is way too young for me to be in a band with.

Number one for "Top 20 Musicians" is William Hung. It's halfway through 2012 and they're still using him as a punch line, and the joke is "Ha ha, you clicked all the way through this list."
I'm going to find something else to do for awhile.

Yeah, the metal list is embarassing; here's a much better list of ten essential albums. Just one guy's taste of course, but at least he isn't trying to spin it as an introduction to metal.

I love how the metal list starts starts with choices off the beaten path (which is counter-intuitive IMO if you're introducing someone to metal) like Sabotage, Cynic, Sigh or Repulsion but ends with Piece of time.

Piece of Time would actually fit in more with the rest of that list than Piece of Mind.

Mods, can this thread just be deleted? I've never seen someone request the deletion of a thread they posted, so I don't know if it's kosher, exactly. I don't really feel like anything positive is going to come out of this thread. I'm fine with keeping it if others want it, but I'd be okay with just axing it.
