Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master' gets a poster

Following the release of the trailer a couple of weeks ago The Master now has a poster which was quickly improved by a movie blog in this animated version.
This post was deleted for the following reason: I'd say just mention this in the existing thread but it looks like somebody has done so now. -- cortex
When I saw it was a poster for "The Master," I was really picturing something like this.

You said "improved". I say "turned into migraine" fuel.

Take that, animation!

I... don't get it. I don't get what the poster design is supposed to express, and I don't get why the animated version is supposed to be an improvement. Or if it's supposed to be taking the piss what piss exactly is being taken and for what purpose.
Is there something obvious here that is just whooshing over my head? Can someone please spoil the joke by explaining it?

So this isn't about this trailer and The Master? Huh.
A charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a religious organization following World War II. A drifter (Phoenix) becomes his right-hand man but as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the drifter finds himself questioning the belief system and his mentor.posted by zamboni at 9:35 AM on August 7, 2012 [1 favorite]
There was a surprise preview of the movie in 70MM last Friday after a showing of The Shining. Most reactions seem to be raves.

I'm as confused as ook, and I have a strange feeling this is all a sinister viral campaign that crosses over into the real world, and if I pull any of these threads far enough I'm going to end up blacking out and waking up and realizing I got in fights with people and There Will Be super creepy conversations with police.
