That's funny, people were saying that over a decade ago, too.

OK, new top thing to do with my gazzilions of dollars if I ever win a huge lottery jackpot - get a whole parade of experimental archeologists, historical re-enactors, cosplayers, whatever and have them present the history of mankind from the paleolithic up through HALO space marines over the course of the day.

Unlikely as I understand that the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math, but a man can dream!

Indeed, most of the folks walking by are just really very *normally* dressed. Quite unremarkable, really. Now, you put this camera in Tokyo's Shibuya area, or along Omote-Sando, and you're gonna get a lot more uniquely and interestingly and often outlandishly dressed and coiffed people. It'd be lots more fun to browse the photos. They could call it Sutairu Burasutah.

Since there's apparently no way to link directly to the About page, I'm going to paste the text in full here for easy reference. I'm having trouble placing each section of it on the irony/sincerity spectrum, and I suspect that's because they're trying to have their cake and eat it too. I think my take on it may be that it's pretty much wholly obnoxious whether read as hopelessly naive or knowingly trolling:
Since the early 2000s, Williamsburg has been a neighborhood popular with a new cultural elite, the heirs of the artists and hipsters who in years past were attracted by its location, one subway stop from Manhattan.

Now in 2012, the neighborhood is poised on the cusp of a new change as the repercussions of recent zoning changes, combined with inland condo construction, have literally paved the way for a new breed of stylish and sassy individuals. A place for the fashionable to be seen, Williamsburg's stretch of Bedford Avenue is often described as a modern Haight-Ashbury, a cultural mecca for the Millenial generation.

To answer the changing times, we introduce Styleblaster, a realtime account of what people in Williamsburg are wearing. Unlike a typical streetstyle blog, Styleblaster documents all -- the visiting fashion plates, the hipsters and have-nots, the native Polish and Italian proud who have for years called this neighborhood home. And above all -- the dapper salarymen and businesswomen who stand to inherit the area.

Situated a block from the hellmouth of the Bedford "L" subway train, our camera aims down the street, capturing Williamsburg on the hoof. Moments after a person enters into the frame, the camera snaps, sending its image onto our blog. For the online fashion browser, a boon: the blog updates in realtime, showcasing each new image as quick as it can be appraised. Online viewers can watch a live feed, peruse a recent history of images, or compare shots over the days and weeks as FW-2012 blossoms into SS-2013.

We believe this service fills a need for live fashion information, with a unique and unmatched vantage point on the hippest block in New York City. It will quickly become a destination for New York City peacocks to traipse by and show off what makes the neighborhood hop. For the savvy, a place to be seen. For the flaneur, a bounty of style. At home or online, fashion has a new destination.
(Well, if the "or compare shots over the days and weeks as FW-2012 blossoms into SS-2013" part is indeed parody, then I might see some charm there. I wonder if it was contributed by a different collaborator than the rest.)

In any case, I suggest they get back to us once they've refocused the surrounding text and transformed the project into a critique of the surveillance state. Or is that so 2007?

If it's not parody, it's simply obnoxious; and if it is parody, then its vapid target doesn't justify the invasion of privacy.

Everything is so abstract these days. Used to be that steamrollers and work crews literally paved the way for new breeds of stylish and sassy individuals. Now, repercussions of zoning changes do it. I'm assuming they're subcontracted to cut down on overhead.

From limeonaire's link to someone explaining this:

Because you know what they say about Williamsburg and the h-words and the blah blah blah… Enough clicking through these shots will show you the real demographics. So far we’re seeing lots of school kids. Ooh, nice coat, man. Hmm. What do you know. Relative diversity! Deep thoughts, deep thoughts.

Even the most 'exclusive' parts of the city have tons of 'diverse' people walking through them to go to work, or Dr.'s appointments, or to switch train lines or whatever.

If this is meant to unmask the 'hidden side' of Williamsburg, I have to wonder who wasn't aware of this side in the first place and how showing this side merits violating so many of these 'diverse' peoples' privacy?

Next up, someone will put hidden cameras in Harlem to show how white it is to advertise it to people from outside of the city. If they haven't already done this, they'll do it soon.

Shit, is this a million dollar idea? Any investors out there? I'll make it happen. I'm on the market for selling out big time and getting paid to be a total dingleberry.

Now, now. I'll talk trash about hipsters as much as anyone, but dressing with style is important. It's how you present yourself to the world and other people, and how put-together you are. Part of my problem with the Williamsburg Style is how lame and cliched it is -- cliched in a way that standardized dress menswear isn't, if done properly. With flair. Flair is everything when you're out on the street.
