Bamako Style

Mali may be in the news for rebels and insurrectionists in the north, but for a reminder that Mali is much more than just another bad news cycle, I'd vote for these unearthed studio portraits from the capital Bamako in the 60's and 70's, featuring stylish young Malians in bellbottoms and aviators on Vespas with flat-brimmed hats cocked just so. They're a pretty awesome reminder of Mali's post-colonial swagger, a pride that one hopes will carry them through today's crisis too.
