PLEASE, SEE THAT MY BRAIN IS GIVEN TO THE NFL’S BRAIN BANK

It was the first time I heard this--that a former NFL player shot himself in the heart, just so he could make sure that doctors could take a look at his brain. Curious, I googled: "NFL player suicide

In fact, when police arrived at Duerson’s apartment, they found a hand-written note: “PLEASE, SEE THAT MY BRAIN IS GIVEN TO THE NFL’S BRAIN BANK.”...

Then came the last straw. On May 2, 2012, Junior Seau killed himself. Like Dave Duerson, Seau shot himself in the heart.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is a serious issue, but we've had posts on the deaths of Dave Duerson and Junior Seau, and discussed football related brain injury many times, so a single blog post about a guy who is just realizing is probably not the best here. -- taz

I wonder if this kind of injury is prevalent in other hard hitting sports like rugby.

Not to the same extent: you don't wear body armour in rugby, so players don't go in for the kind of crunching impacts that NFL players seem to see as perfectly normal.

Concussion can still happen of course: there was a player who was sent off the pitch in yesterday's England / Ireland match suffering concussion after a mistimed tackle.

(NB, I'm sure Metafilter has done this before at great length?)
