The White Student Union: KKKoming to a Campus Near You?

“I’m Matt Heimbach from the White Student Union,” he said, flashing a politician’s smile, “and we just wanted to come by to invite you to patrol campus with us.” Towson University's White Student Union (not an official campus organization), dismissed as an embarrassing fringe group by some, is seen as part of an emerging (and disturbing) spike in interest in white supremacist ideology in the United States following the election of Barack Obama and the continuing decline in the proportion of whites relative to other races.
This post was deleted for the following reason: Vice reports on complicated race issues is probably not a great way to open a conversation about the complicated issue of white supremacy in the US. Otherwise this is just an excuse for a two minute hate which is not super constructive. -- jessamyn
I'm begging you: please don't give these assholes any more attention.
Whenever you're tempted to write a post about Towson's bigots, find a bit of good news or exciting scholarship from an HBCU and post that instead.

Related: Hate Map from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
"Since 2000, the number of hate groups [in the United States] has increased by 67 percent. This surge has been fueled by anger and fear over the nation’s ailing economy, an influx of non-white immigrants, and the diminishing white majority, as symbolized by the election of the nation’s first African-American president."

I have to ask why they agreed to be photographed lit from below in the dark, looking like a bunch of villains? It's fitting I suppose, but are they in on the joke?

Somehow the Confederate flag coffee mug is what pushed me over the edge of benefit-of-the-doubting this guy.
