Measuring the fecal output of hippos. If you wanted to spend the first day of July watching a timelapse video of a Hippo enclosure being cleaned, filled & then dirtied again, you've come to the right place. Full details of the research being done are on this blog post.
At first I was grossed out at the hippoos for sullying up the fresh clean pool before they even got it filled completely...c'mon, give it a minute, at least let it get above your knees!
But then I was even more grossed out that the researchers got in the hippoo water before it even finished draining....c'mon, give it a minute, at least let it get below your knees!

So why does the pool get so turbid before it's even completely filled? Please tell me it's not because of the hipoo.

Yes! Unfortunately management got cowed by the pearl-clutchers suggesting that "Shitty Shitty Hippos" wouldn't fly on TV ads during kids TV. Plus there were those kids who lost an eye or two to the occasional errant marble during product testing. Pussies.

If this doesn't win them an Ig Nobel, then nothing will.

Hippo 1: This water is far too clean. I'm not comfortable.
Hippo 2: I know something we can do about that.

I know it's just the hippos, but there are some quick flashes in the time lapse (like around 0:17, bottom right) that remind me of the subliminal ones of Tyler Durden in Fight Club.

It just broke my heart, watching them let all that fertilizer and livestock feed just wash down the drain like that.
