Notable Deaths of 2001. I knew Ken Kesey, Eudora Welty, and Dale Evans had died this year, but had missed some death notices - R.I.P Gregory Corso, Joey Ramone, Poul Anderson, Sir Fred Hoyle.

Thanks for the Joey link. Even though it's old news, I hadn't read that obit, it definitely expressed a lot of my feelings about the man. I remember stumbling across the movie "Rock and Roll High School" on my neighbor's TV at age 9 and for better or worse I was changed forever.
Tom Carson once said that the Ramones were for "the sort of people who were such hopeless losers that they couldn't even be convincing as outlaws;far from romanticizing that status, the Ramones glorified their own inadequacy."
Speaking as one of those "sort of people" I have to thank Joey for being around and singing our song.
All the other folks you mentioned will definitely be missed as well along with Rufus Thomas, Stuart Adamson, George Harrison and of course the WTC victims. Joey's last live performance was at the Continental in the Village with a local punk outfit calle dthe Bullyboys whose guitarist's day job was being a NYC firfighter, he perished on 9/11. This years losses really hurt.

When I heard of Joey's death, I couldn't help but think of the maudlin rock-n-roll heaven envisioned by many: Jimi and Janis, George and John, the whole MOR radio-friendly superset. Joey wouldn't like it there. I hope there's an annex, a slightly seedier locale that may not quite be in heaven proper, but you can perhaps see it from there. And in that place you'll find the others, the cast-offs, the drifters, the never-really-beens: Stiv Bators, El Jefe, gg allin, Will Shatter, Johnny Thunders, d. boon, Sid Vicious....hey, is Captain Sensible dead yet?

Joey Ramone got a lot of press... I found it really surprising to see his obituary on CNN a few months back. Of course, I can't help but recall the immortal words of my friend Corey: "I have a lot of trouble trusting any punk who survived the seventies." True, Joey was a lot more, ah, pop, than Steve Ignorant, of Crass, whom he was speaking of.
