I'm writing a TV series about the Stasi right now... I've had these pix open on my screen for a couple of weeks. There are some really good oral histories of the Stasi, worth reading. They're not quite what you think they were. In some ways creepier, in some ways more benign. And of course everyone should see THE LIVES OF OTHERS.

I like how recent events seem to make the Stasi of old retroactively change from the nefarious police state that invades your privacy to the clumsy ones who let on they were doing so. It's like classic character development applied to political history.
