CeCe McDonald, an African American transgender woman who served 19 months in a mens prison for defending herself against a racist and transphobic hate crime, was released from prison today. She was picked up from prison by actress and activist Laverne Cox (previously), who is working on a documentary about CeCe. Meanwhile, another young transgender woman of color, Jewlyes Gutierrez, also faces being the sole party charged after defending herself from a transphobic attack.
