Flickr robs photographers who share.

Flickr has grabbed the reprint-for-profit rights of all CC-licensed photos on the site, without sharing the proceeds with the photographers, This has not gone down well.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Heya, seems like a sticky issue but I think if it merits a post we should aim for some more in-depth material than just a short new summary. If you or someone else wants to give it another go with some meatier links about the move and the CC licenses underlying it, that'd be totally fine. -- cortex

It's not really clear they've done anything wrong though — CC-BY-NC has always been an option, and many photographers have used it and set it as their default.

The story here seems to be that a lot of people don't pay any attention to how they've licensed their work until it gets used in a way they didn't like. But flickr has always been up front about the licensing options, and it's fairly easy to set them in their UI.

It's certainly a problem worth addressing, but a statement like "flickr robs photographers" is a pretty biasing way to start the conversation.
