Surveillance critic and journalist Barrett Brown sentenced to 5 years and $890,000 fine for posting a link to a publicly available data file from abusive security contractors (a file which had credit card numbers he didn't know about). Note this charge against him was dismissed, but was still the major factor in his harsh sentencing.
Brown's statement:
"The U.S. government decided today that because I did such a good job investigating the cyber-industrial complex, they’re now going to send me to investigate the prison-industrial complex. For the next 35 months, I’ll be provided with free food, clothes, and housing as I seek to expose wrongdoing by Bureau of Prisons officials and staff and otherwise report on news and culture in the world’s greatest prison system. Wish me luck!"
His dispatches from prison are amazingly insightful and hilarious. One might be tempted to read and spread them as a way of showing disapproval at the government's handling of his case.
