Most debates around sex and disabled people in the mainstream press mirror those of medical ethicists, by focusing on whether disabled people have the right’to pay for sex. But this is just one small part of the overall picture.Katharine Quarmby writes about the challenges facing disabled people and sex.
The debate around disability and sexuality is just one aspect of what Harriet McBryde Johnson called the disability gulag, the tendency for disabled people to be disappeared into long term care without agency:
The nondisabled world sees powerlessness as the natural product of dependence and dependence as the natural product of our needs. However, for nondisabled people, needs are met routinely without restricting your freedom. In the gulag, you have no power. The gulag swallows your money, separates you from your friends, makes you fearful, robs you of your capacity to say -- or even know -- what you want.McBryde Johnson you may know from her unspeakable conversations with Peter Singer.
