But the historic dolls still exist, and new ones are reintroduced as others are retired.

This is quite misleading, as has been discussed here previously. Yes, they retired a couple historical dolls but they've also introduced new ones. There are over a dozen historical characters plus a handful of historical "best friends", nine of which are currently available. And if you look on the website, the historical characters are clearly more prominent than the "girl of the year" and customizable dolls. I haven't read the books for the new historical girls, so maybe they're not as substantial, but the situation is not nearly as yucky as the author makes it out to be.
