When I was in Africa I met more than a few people who had won scholarships to study in Russia back in the day.

I also want to acknowledge all the young communist and socialist leaders who stepped up across the continent as independence spread, only to be meddled with, discredited, and even assassinated by the US and other Western powers, and the shadow wars and conflicts touched off or coopted because of the overwhelming fear of communism. Patrice Lumumba and the utter destabilization of Congo. Angola. Mozambique. Egypt. Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Uganda, etc., etc., etc.

Maybe they're outraged about conflicts and exploitation in Africa too.

It felt so strange being there, like I was living inside two foreign countries at once. I loved learning about the history of that place.
