Gothic industri-Arthurian Afrofuturism from the past!
BTW, I sometimes forget how long Du Bois lived. The man who wrote this story lived to be a nuclear disarmament activist.

A great point (sadly most anti-nuke advocates I can think of are people who were already old when the nuclear age dawned).

This is so exciting! I am sending it to my SF class. The short introduction is also very helpful.
Relatedly - I've often read a lot of speculation (see, like speculative fiction - I am so funny) that there's actually more early work by writers of color amongst the vast archives of old pulps, old small-circulation magazines, etc. (And presumably in unpublished material, as with this one.) Some authorship may be obscured either by pen names or simply because not much is known about many authors, and I suppose may never be retrieved...but surely at least some will be.

George Schuyler (author of the wonderful Black No More) also wrote at least one pulp SF novel, Black Empire.
It isn't an excellent novel, but it is good pulp.
