Is netradio finally squeezing out the little guy?

Live365 hosted a network of small netradio and webcasting operators since 1999. After weathering various threats over the years, new royalty rates were introduced last December which no longer allow discounted rates previously granted to small operators. As of January 31st, Live365 is officially over despite ongoing petitions and letters to reverse the rule changes.

I personally heard about this via my friend Erika, the former program director of my college radio station during my DJing days. She was a computer science major and made a script to randomly stream her entire music library complete with playlists 24/7 out of her home server. As a labor of love, this grew into a proper station at erika.net, where she had been paying the streaming royalties out of her own pocket through the Live365 network, and streaming nonstop since 1999. But she estimates the new changes would cost here about $600 per day, so has been off the air since Live365 went down last month.

Interesting companion to the stories about SoundCloud. I wonder how the various royalty rates stack up for radio / internet radio streaming / podcast use / hosted streaming service (ie Spotify)
