Uh the poem has to do with loss of virginity/innocence if I remember correctly. Think Garden of Edenish. So I really have no idea what's going on here.

I ask for Cliff Notes of this post. Color me lazy but I'm not clicking on every damn link. So sue me. Someone please politely explain this one too me cuz I'm obviously stupid, and not ashamed to admit it.

Amen, Zach. Bad post... although many links in there are worthy of discussion, (1) it's an overload and (2) the post is introduced in a most cryptic and awkward fashion.

Settle, if you're going to start a debate, pick *a* link, comment, and lets' get ready to rumble... or not. I'm genuinely interested.

Settle's plums must be fermented. At least tonight, if not quite a bit lately.

I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast. You know I hate plums. I just did it out of spite.

This kind of artsy thing might go over well at RISD (from the work I've seen there, apparently anything goes over well at RISD) but it just ain't gonna fly at MeFi, kiddo.

At least not the front page. You might be better appreciated over at 9622.

Ummm, I didn't get it.
And I only had the energy to click on the first link, but it said enough:
1/3 of the population growth in the world is the result of incidental or unwanted pregnancies.

So, while we're busy with genetic engineering of humans, maybe we can add a gene that will only let people get pregnant when they really really really want children?

funny thing is that I used to date a girl who would quote that poem all the time. She was in love with the word/surface. Which is fine, great, but also very odd because of all the WCW dark undertones... heh.

BTW, I wonder how relatively cool it is to admit that you don't like a post because you are "too lazy" to click the link... hmm.

I dunno, n9, it's one thing not to click on a link. It's another not to dig through 12.

This isn't exactly Tamim's Bollywood thread, where there were numerous links in the post, but each link had a title attribute explaining why it was linked. I don't mind multiple links in a post, but there has to be some purpose to it, and if there is a purpose there should be an explaination for those of us who don't get it.

In this case, I don't get it.

Settle: "Hey if you don't like a post, just move along..."

Never said I didn't like it. Simply asked someone to explain it to me. Cuz ah'm stoopid.

dissent: "Amen, Zach. Bad post..."

I didn't mean to insinuate it's a bad post. Had I wanted to go in that direction I woulda taken my opinion to MetaTalk. I'm just saying that because Settle chose artistry over content, the point he was trying to make completely went over my head. Perhaps I should have taken that to MetaTalk but in recent memory when I do that people get upset with me anyway. *shrug* Sometimes ya just can't win.

n9: "I wonder how relatively cool it is to admit that you don't like a post because you are "too lazy" to click the link"

Who said anything about me being cool? I proudly see myself as the Carrot Top of MetaFilter. And I said linkS. Plural. I've said in the past that I think a person who posts cryptic Front Page Posts only serves to diminish the potential of their submission's impact on the MeFi community. It's a free reality. People are free to do what they want. I just think Settle's being silly.

Now I'm gonna go skinny dippin'.

Aight, drunk as piss right now, but I'm going to comment anyway. What a fucking waste of a post, and yet, it's Settle and we allow him to fuck this shit up because it's "cool". Hey, whatever, I enjoy jackasses. Kudos Settle, for some strange reason, people hate you but won't call you out. Nice work. Carry on...

Poor Settle, just trying to bring some poetry into our dull lives. Too bad I hate poetry.* But I'm more worried about these insanely provincial cult threads which seem to be all over the place (2 counts for me being all over the place). Maybe MeFi already is separate communities.

BlueTrain: don't post drunk, I tried it once, and I'm pretty sure whatever I said was incoherent. It doesn't look to me like Settle is getting a pass on this one. Wait, why am I trying to reason with you... heh. Carry on...

* I like GOOD poetry, like Shakespeare's Sonnets etc

I just hope nobody misses the William Morris link--for me, that was really what made the whole post work. Even though I couldn't tell what it was doing in the midst of all the discussion of overpopulation and related problems.

Morris was great. He knew what the world needed. Socialism and pretty things.

I hate all poetry -- EXCEPT for this little gem that I stumbled across the other day. It's Haiku, so I'm sure it will appeal to many MeFi-ers.

poetry != math. There's not an "answer" to a poem; you can read it that way if you want though I doubt williams had any such intentions. His poetry is about words and the way they love to fit with each other. to me.

yes. Williams. general idea (always with Williams): no poetry but in the thing itself. That is, get down to the nitty gritty of what is and find poetry/beauty in it. a love poem from hubby to wife.

Settle, it took me awhile to wade through all the links, which I did only because I like WCW, but I found the combination of those an oddly cohesive trek. Thanks for some good reading and light entertainment.
