I guess im officially an old now, but the whole "the recipes only exist in my youtube videos" is such an impediment to my enjoying them . . .

Good post! Abuela kind of looks like she's all "OK nieta, whatever..." and I wish we got to see a little more what some of them look like finished, more than a promo-covered slide before you press play and maybe a flash at the end.

I get the video-recipe frustration. I've seen them done well, I've seen it where the video is just a demonstration of the process and the actual recipe is on a blog or whatever (Food Wishes), and other times I've had to rewind four seconds 10 times to figure out what that last bit is. The format is not great as a cook-along for sure.

For something like this I think it's kind of special that grammy is getting her technique down for posterity with these recipes that are always "eyeing it." I try to get the skeleton down and watch it for technique, like whether you pull cilantro leaves off individually or just chop the whole thing stems and all, stuff like that.

I've been wanting to learn several of these, thanks!

For chilaquiles being so simple, I've had some AWFUL chilaquiles in my lifetime.

I know, right? I had a friend's tio-abuelo who made FANTASTIC chilaquiles, but he was always doing the cooking before folks woke up, so I never got to witness how he did it.

Then I order chilaquiles from a restaurant and get tortilla chips with salsa and cheese.

It's distressing.

Very. Distressing.

slipthought, I promise to credit you in the forward to my future cookbook "dishes your elders cooked before anyone else woke up so no one is entirely sure how they did it but well try anyhow"

Wonderful. In exchange, I offer my favourite YouTube grandmother, Gina. Here she is making a delicious looking ricotta cheesecake.

The worst I had came with a warning. When the menu described them as “Nachos served with egg” I figured that was just a simplification for west suburban Chicagolanders.

Nope.

When they are good, they are glorious. But they frequently aren't all that good, and they can be a risky order in a restaurant.

Growing up in Southern California on the edge of the desert, this sort of home made food was everywhere. You miss it when you leave.

I'll recommend the pozole and chilaquiles recipes as easy and vastly tasty.

So I was browsing this person's videos and realized that her family comes from the same rural region in Mexico that my family is from. I showed the videos to my mom and she replied: "Oh yeah, thats the Contreras family. You know my cousin Alicia? Her husband is part of their family. His cousin is mentioned in one of the videos as being one of the daughter's uncles."

So, rock on Aunt Maria!!

I am biased but Abuelita comes from one of the best food regions in Mexico. As in when UNESCO recognizes traditional Mexican cuisine as the cultural heritage of humanity, they specifically call out these traditions in Michoacan. How i miss proper Uchepos with cream -- which I hope granny will make.
