The truth about Apple's engineering from Louis Rossmann

This post was deleted for the following reason: Sorry for the delayed delete, but it looks like there isn't much here to do but have the same old Anti-Apple / Pro-Apple fight we've had a million times before. If there's something new worth thoughtful discussion on this topic maybe a different sort of post might draw that out? -- taz

He is a jackass, but he's isn't wrong about the compromised engineering. Which wouldn't really be notable if it weren't for the legions of people singing Apple's praises on the Internet. Most all consumer electronics are poorly designed in some way or another.

The truth about Rossman Repair Group.

I got no dog in this fight but you could show the "truth" that any business is shitty by sorting their Yelp reviews from low to high. I'm not sure what "this person has had some bad Yelp reviews" tells us about the post in question.

...just as you shouldn't be sure about what the OP video of worst case scenarios tells us about Apple. Any "truth" strictly sorted from low to high is a questionable perspective.

It would've been nice if the Yelp! link was in reverse order or rating before I went to the effort of trying to work out from their Twitter feed how they could be seemingly both helpful on YouTube and absolutely awful in person.

Whereas the context of a repair firm highlighting specific engineering failures by Apple that made it into mass production and how they were badly dealt with by policy, well, it's interesting and informative and maybe a bit of a rant, but one informed by genuine frustration.

Super weird how even here on Metafilter, the instant someone dares criticize Apple (one of the richest and most powerful corporations in the entire world) someone leaps to their defense and attack the messenger. It's bizarre. Apple is not some helpless victim here, they're a trans-national megacorp. Stanning for a megacorp is… weird.

Occasionally people say that repair technicians and mechanics and the like prefer products which break, since that gives them more work. This video is a good illustration of the opposite principle: People who get into fixing things are often the people who are most bothered by broken things. They want to make a reasonable living, yes, but what drives them to get better at what they do is being deeply disturbed by stuff that doesn't work.

It's the shamelessness of Apple's response, especially under Steve Jobs, which is most galling. Is there a term for the psychological manipulation technique which consists of making a mistake and then telling the victims of the mistake that it's their fault?

The key statistic which is missing from this discussion is the percentage failure rate, some figures from 2015: "The MacBook Air had a 7% failure rate over 3 years, the pricier MacBook Pro, came in with a failure rate of 9%. Combined, Apple's mobile PCs turned in a failure rate of 10%, the lowest of any OEM (original equipment manufacturer)".

Lenovo ThinkPads, as recommended by Louis, failed at an estimated rate of 15% during the first three years.

That technique is the one we doctors call "being an asshole".

So, how many of those 'incidents' are actually his repair shop having botched a disassembly or repair and deciding to blame Apple because Apple wouldn't supply them with spares? The nvidia point would be fair enough if it were true but I have no idea of it is true. That broken seal doesn't look like heat damage to me, those cracks or breaks are nowhere near the fans and look like disassembly damage. I also note that he is chummy with Linus, that character who broke an iMac while trying to dismantle it and whined that Apple would not repair his broken computer for him.

There is little 'truth' here, merely someone making money by pandering to unthinking Apple haters, the easiest source of youtube views there is, seemingly.
