Twitter is pretty awesome sometimes

Last night on a flight home, my boyfriend and I asked a woman to switch seats with me so we could sit together. We made a joke that maybe her new seat partner would be the love of her life and well, now I present you with this thread.

The Twitter thread has been shared more than 17,000 time so far...

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is one of those things that doesn't have much to talk about except the emotional reaction it causes, and that's only fun when the bulk of that reaction isn't "nuke twitter from orbit" -- restless_nomad

I, um.

Holy shit would I be uncomfortable if I was either the woman they asked to switch seats with or the gentleman she wound up sitting next to. Regardless of how much I liked my seat partner.

Yeah, this is like real-life shipping and it’s kinda creepy. I mean, of course I want people to be happy, but this seems to be taking an unhealthy interest in their happiness.

It's nice when nice people meet someone nice, but holy hopping fuck I am glad I grew up in a time when my casual flirtations were not apt to become a spectator sport for twenty thousand weirdos on the internet.

This is gross. Speaking as an autistic with a lot of social anxiety if someone did this to me it would trigger my agoraphobic tendencies and I wouldn't leave the house for months.

I didn't mind the thread itself but the pictures at the end (even with the faces blurred) and the pic that I'm guessing was from his Instagram account seemed to be a bit much.

Knowing there's people like this in the world makes me uncomfortable

Y’all never spectated on the plane? or train? or bus? It’s fun.

The fact that it went viral isn’t really these people’s fault, and the future(??) couple in question are anonymous.

I would probably have spent the flight obsessing over whether I had facilitated a meet-cute, too. And gossiped about it with my seatmate. And told all my friends. And maybe even posted a friends-only FB status about it.

But somehow the chain of pictures seem like a bridge too far.

....Yeah, all they did was post wild speculations about strangers on a platform easily accessible to everyone in the world. They couldn't POSSIBLY have had anything to do with it, right?

Please. A couple photos about "aw isn't this cute" would have been one thing, but "omigod we internet-stalked them and are now guessing what's going to happen to them and are posting pictures of all y'all talking about them" is something else again, and it's creepy.

They posted it on twitter.

Spectated? Sure. Sent that spectating to any more than maybe one person on a private chat? Never. They encouraged the virality, retweeting their replies and continuing to post. This is a not ok thing to do to strangers.

This is basically why I have agoraphobia. Well that and the rape threats after blogging.
