Twitter mulls removing 'like' tool in a bid to improve the quality of debate (paywalled source): "Twitter is planning to remove the ability to 'like' tweets in a radical move that aims to improve the quality of debate on the social network. Founder Jack Dorsey last week admitted at a Twitter event that he was not a fan of the heart-shaped button and that it would be getting rid of it 'soon'."

Twitter's response: As we've been saying for a while, we are rethinking everything about the service to ensure we are incentivizing healthy conversation, that includes the like button. We are in the early stages of the work and have no plans to share right now.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This looks like a conversation that will go way better and more interestingly once it's an actual announced feature change and not just "mulling" over something "soon" -- restless_nomad

Josh Butler:

Users: hey can you get rid of the Nazis please

Twitter: ok sure, we've changed the stars to hearts for likes

Users: no no, zero Nazis please

Twitter: yep we're getting rid of Vine

Users: nah hey, what about the Nazis

Twitter: ok ok fine, no more likes

I'd be good with a blue-badge Swastika that said "Verified Nazi" identifying Nazis on Twitter.

They could go further and remove the retweet counter. That would have far more impact.

The likes will turn back to yellow stars. Posts with a lot of stars will automatically have ((())) added. You know, just to make things easier for Twitter's core user base.

I think this rumor is a submarine attempt at news-cycle theft.
