Sites with Depth

Ian Ference curates the blog Brooklyn Stereography where he features and writes about Stereo Photographs from his vintage collection. EG: A Burlesque Fan Dance from 1933 (NSFW), WWI Ruins, Carnaval de Nice 1933, Ambulances from Champagne 1915 & Saint-Mesmes 1916, and, naturally, 3d photos of 1933 Brooklyn.

Any subject that has been captured in 2D photos has probably also been captured in 3D. All these web sites use parallel view style images because that is the format that works with viewers. With practice some people can free view them. If you've ever seen a "Magic Eye""(ME image of the week)" image the technique is the same.

This is my 100th post and my 10,000th comment to the blue. A confluence that took only a smidge of planning when I noticed the numbers coming up last week.

It's really amazing how much these bring the scene to life. Here are a couple where the 3D image brings out details that really aren't apparent in the separate 2D images:

By a funny coincidence I was just reading about Brian May and his "Owl" stereoscopic viewer earlier today, which consists of a pair of lenses and plastic casing for holding a cellphone for viewing stereoscopic images. A somewhat similar design is the Tool 10,000 days album cover, which was originally for viewing some stereoscopic images included in the album inlay, but which can be repurposed for viewing Youtube 360 videos if you open up the cardboard flap and place your phone over the top of one of the images.

When viewing these 19th century stereoscopic images I often find that they have too much 3D "pop" than appears realistic, perhaps they shot them with a larger separation than a normal human interocular distance? A few years ago when 3D smartphones were temporarily a thing I had a play with an LG 3D camera phone, and interestingly the two lenses on the back of the phone were only a centimetre or two apart, and yet this was somehow enough to capture photos and video with a convincing stereoscopic effect. I'm not sure whether this was because they were doing some kind of complex post-processing in software, or whether a smaller separation actually feels more natural when viewing images that don't occupy your entire field of view.

A tip for more easily free-viewing the stereoscopic images at the links: shrink the page in your browser by pressing Ctrl-minus a few times so you don't have to go as cross-eyed.

These are great! And I like that Brooklyn Stereography has also translated so many of them into anaglyph images, too. Actually, I wish I'd found this a few weeks ago, as after a visit to the "3D: Double Vision" exhibit at LACMA I decided to experiment with making a collage from various anaglyph images, using the poster/brochure image for the exhibition as a base. I ended up using Reddit's anaglyph forums to find some additional images... but this blog would have really expanded my palette...

Berezin.com has just about every supply you need for DIY 3d and viewing. The Wheatstone Mini-Scope is good for viewing on monitors or prints.

I wish these had left/right swapped options. I can do the cross-view (cross-eyed) technique but not he parallel one. Thanks for the suggestions for viewers Sophont!

If you need to swap L/R or want to convert to anaglyph or other formats, Muttyan has made various programs, which are free. Stereophotomaker and Stereo WEB Browser are two that are useful for this. If you want to shoot 3d on your phone using the "cha-cha" method, he has an app.
