M. Night Shyamalan vs. The People in The Theater Has there ever been a class-action lawsuit against a director for false-advertising? I went to see Signs last night. It was NOT the movie advertised. It was not even the TYPE of movie advertised. In fact, the "plot" of the advertised movie, aliens and crop circles, was so shamelessly tossed aside that I was insulted. It wasn't that the movie sucked. It did. That alone isn't reason for legal action. If so George Lucas was be transcribing scripts for Theodore Kaczynski. The legal issue here is that I paid for a movie ABOUT aliens and crop circles and was shown something else. Something I wouldn't have chosen to pay for. I left the movie wanting reparations; not just for the 2 hours I'd lost, but for all the time I spent anticipating the movie that was advertised in the trailers. I'm telling you, Blue Crush had BETTER be about sports excellence!

Good point, however, I do believe that this post does not belong on MetaFilter. And thanks ever so much for the spoilers, spoilerhead.

The fact that you're even thinking of seeing "Blue Crush" kind of disqualifies you as a film critic, don't ya think?

The fact that you, and everyone else in America are *still* interested in those fucking crop circles is the real problem here.?

Translation: I think it would be better if the trailers gave us a complete synopsis of the movie. Because surprises are bad. And I'm too lazy to read reviews. But not too lazy to sue movie studios.

Who would have thought that "Breakin' 2, Electric Bugaloo" was all about breakdancing? I want my money back from 1984.

Y'know, if Tom Cruise ever comes out of the closet, I'm gonna sue him for acting like he was straight in every movie but "Interview With The Vampire" (and maybe "Top Gun").

Certainly would make more sense than what mikemonteiro proposes.

Pancakes are circular, too, you know.

Back on topic - The big thing to keep in mind is that the director of the movie has little, if any, to do with the marketing side of the house.

There are any number of movies that have suffered from this same kind of treatment. The Frighteners, starring Michael J. Fox was one - marketed as a comedy, of all things.

"A crap circle can be described as a crop circle shaped phenomena made of manure. The circles have been found in fallow, or unused, tobacco fields."

Yeah, you would think M. Night could've found some less thoroughly debunked pseudoscientific pap on which to base his movie (trailer).

What's next? "Unbendable" starring Bruce Willis as Uri Gellar.
