This is just a flat out great show. It's a pretty frequent rewatch in our home.
I would say the most underrated performer is Lesley Gore - skip to 8:27 to hear her shred "It's My Party." Sure, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, the Stones, Smokey - they're all good, but the real eye opener for us was how good Lesley was.

When I first got into the early Stones (in the early 70s, a decade late) I heard of this film and rode my bicycle a distance to see it in a midnight showing. Wasn't disappointed, but I come in here to also recommend the follow-up, from 1966, also available in its entirety, (and hosted by David McCallum, the Man from U.N.C.L.E himself!) -- The Big T.N.T Show, which I've just seen for the first time. Noteworthy performances by Ray Charles, Bo Didley, the Byrds and the Lovin' Spoonful (and many others).

Rash: Useless trivia about The Big T.N.T. Show: in crowd shots you can see Frank Zappa with his distinctive facial hair, and Ron and Russell Mael who would later form the band Sparks. (Ron Mael, on the other hand, lacks his distinctive mustache.)

The Big T.N.T Show also features the young Joan Ten-Pounds-of-Sincerity-In-A-Five-Pound-Bag Baez [I keed! I keed! -- but still...] singing You've Lost That Loving Feeling under the direction of Phil Spector and with his Orchestra -- YMMV but truly what a giant Yin-Yang of Pure Good and Pure Evil is embodied there.

James Brown's TAMI show performance is one for the ages. Watching him do the cape gag in front of an audience who had never seen it before is like watching Ali box in his prime—a supernatural talent at the top of his game.
I agree that Leslie Gore is the sleeper on this lineup. I was shocked at how good she was the first time I saw it. Really, though, everyone is good. Except Jan & Dean. They always sucked.

Agreed, in addition to her great voice, her stage presence is so charismatic and you can feel how much she is in her element. As somebody who only became aware of her in the late 70s/80s, this was really unexpected.
