Note that some of the names (like John McCain) are deceased.

Putin doesn’t even want the zombie John McCain to come in.

More likely they have list of people they have grievances, but no way for the person putting the list together from striking names as the list indicates that the Russians know he’s dead as it lists those who have died as deceased.

Has some serious "You're not breaking up with ME, I'm breaking up with YOU" vibes.

Also -- totally a missed opportunity to declare Trump persona au gratin.

My Republican congressperson, French Hill, and both of my Republican senators, John Boozman and Tom Cotton. Most of the Republican congresspeople you probably dislike most--Gaetz, Greene, Boebert, Cawthorn, Gosar, Cruz, Rubio, Stefanik... a lot more Republicans than I was expecting, although Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell do not make the list.

Some of the Democratic ones you probably like--Ocasio Cortez, Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Pramila Jayapal... Bernie Sanders is over here like, 'well, maybe I shouldn't've visited Moscow back in the '80s.'

Probably just the easiest way to make sure that MTG, Boebert, Gaetz, and Cawrhorn are permabanned so that they can’t go make crazy in Russia.

In that case, it's okay for him to go.

> Russia focused on the U.S. tech industry in naming Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft President Brad Smith to the list.

Right about now millions of people are googling "brad smith" and wondering what Satya did to get demoted.

Also: sucks for any of the ten thousand brads travelling to Russia today, but maybe this was a bad year to visit St Basil's Cathedral anyways.

Russia is definitely climbing up the list of most toxic nations in human history.
The current Russia, bad as they are, would have to struggle to even make it into the top five most toxic nations to have historically occupied their portion of the Eurasian landmass.

There's certainly some odd ones in here - I stumbled across a former local (Fairfax County) judge who is now deceased. Why would a non-federal county judge be on here? Not to mention he's, you know, dead. Also lots of people I've never heard of listed as "US Citizens" - would hate to have a similar name and be traveling to Russia (not that I would advise anyone travel there anytime soon).

The US, UK, and EU imposed similar bans on dozens/hundreds of Russian citizens at the start of the invasion, but I think they were a little less indiscriminate.

They've banned the whole Minnesota congressional delegation except for Rep. Jim Hagedorn (died a few months ago, seat is still vacant) and Sen. Tina Smith. I've got to think that Senator Smith is wondering why on earth she, of all of them, is still allowed in Russia. Did she do something wrong? Something right? WHAT???

Did they just update their original sanctions list with a few dozen random conservatives because everyone pointed out that the original sanctions list ( that the HRC tweet up above us referring to) only sanctioned Democrats?

I read it as MTG, Gaetz, etc. are all either wildly unpredictable or just there to make the next news cycle that they are almost certainly more of a debt then a profit to Russia, in a PR sense.

McConnell, on the other hand, is a well known "old school" pol and back room deals can be done with him. And, also what Thorzdad said.

Or could be the thing where you get angrier at the people who "should" be doing your dirty work not pulling through than you get at the people who were more neutral/had more power independent from you to begin with. Like how Trump saved his nastiest comments for Repubs who voted against his plans, not Dems.

Or the spy thing where once the plants become known they aren't valuable anymore yeah.

But like, who knows really... This list seems a lot more geared towards domestic damage control than international diplomacy, to me.

Mitch McConnell [did] not make the list...

Perhaps Russia does not want to alienate his wife Elaine Chao and her family, who are persons of influence with China. As most folks know, her father, James, founded The Foremost Group, a huge shipping company (now run by sister Angela) with extensive ties to China. Paraphrasing Wikipedia, Foremost borrowed millions of dollars from a Chinese state bank and owns a substantial interest in a major shipyard funded by a steel producer owned by the Chinese state, with whom it also has major contracts. Moreoever, Angela and James Chao have served on the boards of a Chinese state-owned shipbuilder, and Angela has been on the board of the Bank of China, as well as the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (which was created by the government of China). From January 2018 to April 2019, 72% of the total tonnage shipped by Foremost was shipped to and from China. The Foremost Group has almost no footprint in the United States other than its headquarters in New York. More details about the family and their longstanding connections to powerful people in China here in this NYT article.

I should have added to my comment about Mitch McConnell's exclusion from the list that China would be irritated with Russia if Elaine Chao's family felt maligned or inconvenienced by the latter's actions.

Actually… yes, though I won’t identify which. It appears they have included a lot of people in Congress regardless of party affiliation, which makes it all the more important to scrutinize those who were omitted.
