The US is not paying attention to the right bad guys If this were 1938, the course advocated by the president -- and endorsed in the congressional resolution -- would be the equivalent of the Allies' declaring war on Mussolini's Italy but ignoring Hitler's Germany. We are turning our backs on the greater danger, and pretending not to recognize that an attack on Baghdad could spark the wake-up call to the terrorists sleeping in our midst.
So says Senator Bob Graham, the head of Senate intelligence in this op ed from todays Washington Post.
''What he was trying to do is send a Paul Revere-like alarm to the Senate, the White House and the country that says Iraq is important but if we are not sensitive to other threats out there, we may pay a heavy price for it,'' said Norman Ornstein, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank in Washington, D.C.
