Here's a permanent link to sniper news.
Perhaps Mat should put that on the sidebar along with: Israel Bombing and Pancakes?

This past summer as I was busy doing lots of things and was away from the news for hours at a time, I would come back to read about another suicide bombing in Israel and not be sure if it was really new or the news cycle was still on the previous one.
This is getting to be the same kind of routine, and that's upsetting. Hell, maybe it's the guy's MO in the first place.
(on preview: they just shut down the American Legion Bridge before peak rush hour. I'm glad I live in Boston now.)

I can understand that if you're not in the US, Mefi is more tempting for this kind of post, but really, if the BBC isn't good enough for you, there are plenty of American radio stations that stream on the Web. This kind of post does not belong here.

Hey. I know this is news. And I know this is sniper news.
But still: SOMEBODY JUST GOT SHOT AND POSSIBLY KILLED!!
If you do not want to post to news link that might disappear, then don't. Say nothing at all.
But this "*YAWN*" shit is disgusting. Damn disrespectful and disgusting.

Someone somewhere (appologies if it was here) worked out that if the sniper shot one person every day for the next year, you'd have a one in 10,000 chance of getting shot.
I know it must be pretty frightening to think that someone might take a pot shot at you, but the chances are pretty slim.
Somehow I can't help wondering if the reason the USA has more serial killers than the rest of the world has something to do the the American media...
[I'll now go back into hiding and leave this as a US only flamewar]

Local streaming news radio here. Once this post gets yoinked, maybe it could be included in the sidebar?
(No, I don't work for WTOP, it's our only real news radio in town.)

Does the US have more serial killers? Or, is the US media more likely to report on serial killers?

Thanks so much for keeping us up to date on the latest police blotter info from Virginia and Maryland!
Since we've all decided to ignore Matt's explicitly stated wishes, I guess I should post the important breaking news from Europe: A gas explosion at a steel factory in eastern Belgium killed two workers and injured at least 13.
I'll be posting regular updates on this story to the front page from now on, just as soon as they appear on Google News. THIS IS IMPORTANT, PEOPLE!!
Unfortunately, pancakes still cannot be found easily here in Spain.

Has anyone seen Bowling for Columbine? How was it? (And how lucky did Moore get to have a sniper case right around the opening of his movie?) Does Michael Moore have a white van?

I'm just enjoying the "sniper rally" on Wall Street. When this guy gets caught the market is going to start paying attention to the Iraq thing again.
My favorite thing to happen would be that the guy just puts away the gun and takes up stamp collecting.

Speaking of white vans, White Van Man is a UK dictionary entry and has cult tabloid status. Altho' 'he' doesn't go 'round shooting people. Yet.

gelatinouscitizen, or that 911 happened, as, DENVER (AP) -- A journal written by Columbine High School killer Eric Harris indicates he fantasized about causing a far larger bloodbath of epic proportions, including crashing a plane into New York City.

*sigh* another sniper breaking-rumour-news post. so we waste a FPP and clueless people will post / bitch here all day long.
Perhaps it is best if Matt leaves this up all day and deletes it tonight otherwise we are doomed to get double posts on the sniper rumours as soon as this disapears from the blue.

bkdelong -- your post makes me wonder about something that's been troubling me. The traffic in that part of the US is some of the worst -- and worse yet at rush hour. The timing on some of these shootings seems suspect.
Shoot, evade, set-up another line of fire, evade again. The shootings are no doubt exceptionally well planned but... has anyone started a two sniper theory?

I'm an angry young man, too. And walking from the parking lot to work every day at a great big mall right off a beltway exit just a few miles from the "hunting grounds" I can't help but get the wierdest feeling of there being a scope sighted to me. You should try it some time. Oh, wait, I wouldn't wish that kind of anxiety on anyone. The anxiety where you know the odds are slim, but there's still a chance, and there's absolutely no method, no reason, and it's completely out of your control to stop. Yeah.
Each day, as dumb as it sounds, I think more and more about what it must feel like to have to take the bus somewhere in Jerusalem, and how the feelings I have now must be magnified tenfold amongst the people there.
Yeah, let's argue about the rules of posting, and ignore the discussion of fear, wickedness, and interesting tidbits about modern law enforcement.
(I do understand the rule, though. There'd be sniper threads every day, and that would get ridiculous.)
