Another post-linked shooting. Is it not a little worrying that there are murders happening across the US that only make headlines because they happen to have been committed by a famous serial killer ? USAians seem to be inured to death at both ends of the spectrum: Random and Judicial.

When you said "post-linked," I cringed instinctively, thinking you were talking about some Metafilter rule I might have broken.

Matthowie sez: "Yay! The sniper case looks closed. Got something sniper related? Put it here, instead of anything new, thanks."

I still think random killings are the exception, not the rule. People kill out of impulse without forethought, 95% of the time, and then usually a friend or loved one. The exception just does not prove the rule. There are no Hannibla Lecters but only subnormal, borderline Jeffery Dahmers--and, now, John Muhammads, who, as it turns out, was just as dull witted. Consider the Tylenol poisonings--you and I could think of a thousand ways to commit traceless murder via the grocery vegetable section.. but we don't. Why exactly I don't know, but we don't. So, maybe most people, if not all that good, are, at least, not all that bad.
