Is there a way to tweak somebody's browser to send every page through the Eater of Meaning? Would make a decent prank.

Reading this FPP reminded me of my experiences with Finnegans Wake. Very uncomfortable. I tried reading it aloud, even, just like I tried with the Wake. Worked just about as well.

Search Google for the phrase "travesty generator," and pick one. They're lots of fun.

was anybody here ever a regular poster/lurker back when alt.non.sequitur had its heyday? here's a decent link if you've never heard of it, it's the mid-90s faq. it seems childish at first but it was really fun, a sort of mental food fight. probably the greatest thing i've ever encountered on the internet was a post there, that ran along the lines of:
when hear that robble robble robble behind you, you know you're fucked.

Before it slips my mind entirely, I have to give props to Leonard Richardson, who wrote this thing in the first place, and is also the mind behind the page discussed here. Props and apologies for eating up all the bandwidth... If you know how to make it work, you probably should download the Python version to play with.

wanderingmind, thanks again for the post. One of the funniest things about this is the way it affects one's brain... when you read, or even scan through, a whole page such as mmoncur's last link, the brain works so hard to try to make sense of it that when returning to, say, the MetaFilter main page, for the first few seconds the words still seem to be randomly generated - as if the brain is saying, yeah, OK, sure, this all makes sense... as nonsense.

The Eater of Meaning is a program for extracting the message from the medium. Format and presentation are unaffected, but words and letters are subjected to an elaborate nonsensification progress that eliminates semantics root and branch. It is written in Python, and can be run as a standalone script or used as a CGI-based proxy.
