How does one claim that protecting Americans is Priority #1 in one breath, and then turn around and support the building of hate into the Constitution? Happy Hateful Holidays, everyone!! A lesson in tolerance for the new year.

He's trying to shore up his base. They're worried the Christian right may not come to the polls in the numbers they want. --This was interesting, regarding religious voting blocs: Also, a minority of Christian right voters may stay home for another reason: They are unconvinced that Bush's religious rhetoric has translated into the social policies they were counting on, such as clear stands against homosexual marriage and all forms of abortion, analysts said.

That said, I hope this doesn't happen. And this makes no sense, if he supports an Amendment: "The position of this administration is that whatever legal arrangements people want to make, they're allowed to make, so long as it's embraced by the state or at the state level," he told Sawyer. So he's in favor of gay civil marriages if states allow it, but still wants an amendment to the constitution?

I despise Bush's politics but I don't see where he supported building hate into the constitution. Like the way Bush himself throws around the word evil the word hate is thrown around too much and used too lightly. I don't agree with his stance on the sanctity of marriage as long as it contains Federal baggage in terms of tax implications and so on, but I don't know that it's derived from hate. I don't support garish displays of the 10 commandments in a courthouse but that doesn't mean I hate Christians.

Bush seems confused on this point. There are two different amendments on gay marriage floating around. The first, the one I regard as much more damaging, would restrict marriage to men and women nationwide. The second would limit the applicability of the Full Faith and Credit clause to gay marriage. In other words, one state might give gay marriage legal status, but other states would not have an obligation to recognize that status.

I was going to comment on this, but after trying to read the article, and running into that evil java-video Nexium ad, I feel to do so would encourage further links from abcnews.go.com, which I now place a curse upon.

I love the fact that I got a banner ad about a herpes suppressor while reading this article. Dirty STD's are socially acceptable: so long as you're a cartoon boy and girl. Gay marriage: ewwww, icky.

substrate -- Adding an amendment such as this, to me, is a harbinger for more to come once the precedent has been set. It's discrimination. It's the binding of church to state. If his argument is based on religious teachings that man + woman = marriage, then that should not translate into the legal definition of marriage. To build this into the Constitution is the same as adding an amendment that all children should pray for Jesus at the beginning of the school day.

I don't see it as anything but hate. If he was truly concerned about the sanctity of marriage, then he would be adding amendments to the Constitution having to do with divorce. There are more divorced people in America than there are gays wanting to marry each other. Just because he throws around the word tolerance doesn't make it anything less than hate in my eyes. And besides, tolerance implies that he puts up with the gays even though he would rather not. Isn't it time to move past tolerance?

I know this has been rehashed on MeFi a bunch of times, but to me this gets scarier and scarier the closer it gets to election time, and the hypocrisy is infuriating. Now that Bush has Hussein in custody he can dazzle the masses with his competency and people will re-elect him again. We'll have bin Laden before November I am sure.

Just added transfer.go.com, *.xlontech.net, and *.atdmt.com to my list of blocked sites. That got rid of the Nexium ad, but didn't get rid of the article, unfortunately.

Yeah, I got the stupid purple pill ad too, but the topmost banner on the first page for me was a Herpes suppressant ad featuring to cartoon people walking down the street. As the girl was chatting about something (it wasn't made clear what it was), the boy had thought bubbles about the "little red bumps that won't go away".
