Also see the Paul's Boutique Samples and References List. It's quite comprehensive.

It occurred to me that a wiki [much like wikipedia] would be awesome implementation for popular music lyrics. Think of how many cross-connections there would be to different musicians, ideas, memes, etc in recent pop music such as Beck, the Beasties, and the late Soul Coughing.

plemeljr: I've been planning on doing a lyrics wiki thing for quite a while. Actually, I even registered a domain for it about a week back. Might even get around to getting it up and running soon, heh.

Ill Communication - B-Boys Making with the Freak Freak
Unfortunately, there's no annotation for the sample. Bastards!
This is pretty cool, although it does need some work. Big project to take on though, so good on this guy/gal. BTW, new album scheduled to come out June 15. Almost six years to the day from Hello Nasty.

In a similar vein:
The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics page.
(And yeah, wiseguy, some people like both bands.)

Paul's Boutique is one of the two or three greatest records I've ever heard, and it's awesome to see someone likes it as much as I do.
The samples list alone is incredible. "Johnny Ryall" alone samples Ofra Haza, McCartney's first record, David Bromberg and Grandwizard Theodore Kevie Kev Mothafuckin' Rockwell? Hoo-hah! Yo, Garcon, the check!
(Which I know is a misquote, but that's what I thought they were saying, and hey, it's my quote now.)

You're right, though, it is incomplete. In "Eggman," the rhythm guitar in the second half of the song comes from the second-last song on Abbey Road... The end of "Carry That Weight" or the beginning of "The End," depending on where the demarcation is.
I'm pretty sure. If I'm wrong, it's awful close.
And Ufez, I used to have a home-dubbed cassette with the routine that produced that "Mashed potatoes" line, and I can't for the life of me remember who it was. The tape had Moms Mabley on the other side of it.
Any one of you seen that tape? You'd know, right?

This is a lot of fun, though like many of these projects it can be unintentionally funny. When you see this line,
Rolled up a wooly and I watched Columbo
which part of the lyric do you think more deserves explanation for more people? I, for one, am thoroughly familiar with what "watching Columbo" is. But maybe that's just me.

What, soyjoy? My apartment is drafty, and I like Peter Falk. I roll myself in woolies all the time.
You're not implying there's a euphemism in there someplace, are ya?

[this is good]
This has been one of my favourite websites for years, so thanks wobh for reminding me of its location. Fun stuff!
I use rap lyrics to teach poetry in high school, and the B Boys are by far the most fun, but also the most confusing for my poor, culturally unenlightened students. Maybe the annotated versions would be the way to go, and use them as a segue into the world of referencing (name-dropping, product placement, sampling) as a way of creating an identity.
I think I will have to go for a drive now with Licenced to Ill on the stereo, for old time's sake.

The line "If this is gonna be that kinda party I'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes" is by Red Foxx. I'm not sure which album it was on.
If anyone cares, email me and I should be able to tell you in a few days. I think I have the album somewhere.
