So, how is it that uber punk chick Patti Smith gets delegated to the "fits nowhere" category?

(Maybe for the same reason Nina Hagen is even listed at all ...)

Until this thread gets deleted, I will stand firm defending Nina Hagen! Let no-one besmirch her punk name! What on earth do you mean by this...this...this groundless impuning of her punk credentials!

Because despite it commerciality "New York New York" shocked my friends and family in a way Patti Smith never did.

If you don't understand why Nina Hagen is listed you either haven't heard Nunsexmonkrock or you simply don't really understand what punk is about. It's not about the sound so much as the content. She's punk the same the Talking Heads are punk. They were definitely in the scene and singing about punk-type issues, but they made a new sound to emphasize those issues and make what you might call art if you want to be adventurous. Nina's songs certainly went downhill after Nunsexmonkrock, but that's because she started letting other people make music for her for some unacceptable reason. It's a pretty typical situation.

Nunsexmonkrock is undeniably punk rock. Some really incredible songs on there. Infact not one bad one.

Patti Smith though, I never understood why she was considered punk rock. Except for being at the right place at the right time. (Honestly)

Patti Smith uber punk? Proto-punk maybe.

Nina, Diamanda & Siouxsie, among others, pee contemptuously on her "Rimbaud comes to life as a female" act.
