Sometime before we split from chimps, but before we split from Neanderthals Human beings lost the ability to produce a certain kind of sugar called Neu5Gc) which lines cells in almost all other mammals (Based on mutation rates, this was likely 2.7 million years ago, give or take 1.1 million years.). Interestingly most mammal brains contain less Neu5Gc then the rest of their bodies.

With so many bad science stories out there it's nice to come across one that is written both intelligently and elegantly.
