re: Warhammer... Yeah - me too. If I'd had the time and the nous, I'd have pulled a bunch of warhammer links together (fan fiction, official sites, communities. I'm not a fan, so probably wouldn't have done it justice). It's interesting that warhammer is so huge, and yet seems so buried away from normal culture. As if Gygax had managed to cast Invisibility +10 on it. (renders object invisible to all but Goths and Nerds)
I live in quite a small town, and yet there seems to be this huge shop in the centre of town dedicated to Warhammer. This is despite the fact that I've NEVER seen Warhammer mentioned on T.V., on the radio or in magazines. Games Workshop seem to have a turnover of around $250 Million a year (pretty much selling the one game) and nobody seems to have heard of them.
There's a great F.P.P just waiting to happen.

Warhammer must be some kind of weird nodal point, I just started playing it (Fantasy, not 40K) about a week ago, and it was in the paper and everything.
"In a culture dominated by virtual diversions and mass marketing, Warhammer has acquired an ardent following by being tactile and mysterious, using no advertising at all."

Warhammer is one of those weird things. My brother in law works for them, and said, in the same breath, "Games Workshop provides value for money" and "They still make a profit even after giving us a 50% discount".
I give their success to their policy of building up enthusiastic gamers, skilled painters, etc and after they drop over a grand in the store giving them a job selling the game to their friends. (you have to be skilled in at least 3 of the games workshop games! to get a job there!)
Its not viral marketing, its positively militant.
