I posted this link because I thought the site was interesting. I can appreciate it as an piece of art and I thought people here would feel the same. I guess I was wrong. I don't see how this post breached MeFi's guidelines, though. I'll apologise anyway. Sorry hey. It won't happen again.
posted by sjvilla79 at 10:05 PM on April 10, 2005

To clarify, sjvilla, if you're really not kidding... images embedded in posts are generally a bad idea.
posted by banished at 10:06 PM on April 10, 2005

It's the picture on the front page that has everyone up in arms. Generally a big no-no.
posted by jonah at 10:07 PM on April 10, 2005

It's not really just the picture.
posted by angry modem at 10:09 PM on April 10, 2005

I'd also say it counts as a self-post for showing off your own storTrooper, but even that isn't as bad as the image.
posted by banished at 10:09 PM on April 10, 2005

Again, sorry. I'm off to MetaJail.
posted by sjvilla79 at 10:09 PM on April 10, 2005

MetaJail... actually... that's not bad. Someone put a coding request in on MetaTalk, I think this kid has something here.
posted by banished at 10:11 PM on April 10, 2005

Later, folks. I'm following sjvilla79 to MetaJail, where I will MetSodomize him.

I second MetaJail.

This post will soon wither, but forever live in memory as the only MeFi post (I've ever seen) with an image.

Which heavy metal band are you? I took the quiz, and it said I am AC-DC.

i thought it was a cute post, sjvilla79...i come around here quite a bit, and it wasn't out of place at all to me to see an image as part of a post...i just never occurred to me that i had never seen one on the front page...not would it have occurred to me that it is a rule...indeed, i didn't even know that there is a page of posting guidelines on Metafilter, which someone might have kindly posted before, or at least along with, the silly hall-monitor posts.

Leave it to me to state the obvious... but, "member since: March 31, 2005"

Indeed! Is it so ridiculous to think a little courtesy might have been in order? This isn't high school.

gosh, that came out a bit more preachy that i had intended...just be nice to the new people

Is it so ridiculous to think a little courtesy might have been in order?

Why is it that I have so much trouble reconciling those two statements from the same person?

From the posting page, with emphasis added (yes, right up-front where it would be impossible to miss):
Found something cool on the web and want to share it with everyone else? Great! Just fill the blanks and it'll go live. A sample link is shown below. If this is your first post, please read the guidelines.

Note: You read the guidelines, right? Because linking to your own site in this space will result in a deletion and your account will be banned.

Seems pretty simple to me.

I love the shocked reaction to posting an image on the front page. Reminds me of when someone would say swear words in kindergarten and everybody would get indignant for a second and then threaten to tell the teacher.
posted by Hildago at 10:42 PM on April 10, 2005

Well, now there's just a big dumb blank space and a link that doesn't work.

i didn't even know that there is a page of posting guidelines on Metafilter

a link to it is prominently displayed when you join, and perhaps even on the posting page. the assumption is that you would read it.
posted by quonsar at 10:50 PM on April 10, 2005

well, i'm sure i've seen the guidelines, then...just didn't remember it...

...while everyone is looking at it, though, can someone point out the sentence in that agreement that says don't post images on the front page? Is the problem that the image is hosted by the poster, and thus constitutes a self-link? A hosted image isn't really a link in the sense that a link directs the user to one's own page, and that's how i would have interpreted the whole self-link rule...is there some connection i'm not seeing between the poster and the sites linked to?

It's been done, but not in a while.
posted by felix betachat at 11:06 PM on April 10, 2005

The only way this post could be more LJ-Whorish is if it included a quiz to see which storTrooper you are.

At least the poster had the decency to replace the forbidden image with an plain blue expanse to rectify the situation. This show of remorse should lead to forgiveness. He's learned his lesson.
posted by blasdelf at 11:10 PM on April 10, 2005

yeah, and a cursory look at those image posts would indicate that the people in those threads didn't freak out about images in the post....so if it's not in the guidelines and not a rule by some well-known precedent, what the hell?
posted by troybob at 11:12 PM on April 10, 2005

Common sense. Same with a reasonable post length. Not to mention this post was covered earlier on boingboing. Images are appropriate for BoingBoing, but not for MetaFilter.
posted by banished at 11:14 PM on April 10, 2005

The MeFi Wiki also covers images in explaining bad posts and formatting rules. "No images, HR tags, or funky funky HTML."
posted by banished at 11:19 PM on April 10, 2005

Your pathetic groans for appeasement will not dissuade the storTrooper march upon blogdom. Their time has come (again) to seize the expanses of screen real estate stolen by such trinkets as weather fairies and fetuses in jars.
posted by andendau at 11:21 PM on April 10, 2005

ok, yeah...my curiosity is from the user perspective...if one is a new poster on metafilter, and reads the guidelines as directed, and the Wiki topic isn't linked from the guidelines page although it contains posting rules not covered in the guidelines, by what unserendipitous route does one come to the knowledge that images are forbidden?
