Lions and tigers and Reconstructionists, oh my! The big scary religious right, in my own Massachusetts backyward....run away! I cower and tremble as David Barton, like Godzilla, looms near.

This post was deleted for the following reason: And so? I don't see the reason you posted this.

( from the link ) "A Top Christian Nationalist Comes to Massachusetts :

David Barton is perhaps the leading proponent of the notion that the U.S. was once, and should again be a "Christian Nation." He wants to sell you on that idea. He has books and tapes to sell too." - Oh, I bet he does. I hope my brother doesn't buy this stuff ( *cringe* )

It's funny because Reconstructionist judaism is just delightful.

But seriously, why should we care about this guy? It's a measure of how prevalent these whackjobs are that I had not heard about this particular one. Hearing about him now doesn't make me any more scared than I was, but then, I was already pretty concerned.

Barton is currently at the center of a series of controversies in Washington, DC regarding his association with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN).

Frist recently invited his congressional colleagues to participate in a "private tour" of the U.S. Capitol building with Barton. Frist described the tour as a "Fresh Perspective on Our Nation's Religious Heritage" and that Barton is "a historian noted for his detailed research into the religious heritage of our nation."

Frist - Stupidest. surgeon. ever.

I was thinking about how seriously some of these reconstructionists are taken in washington . . .
do you think that it could be because they are just much more vocal when it comes to talking to their senators and that people who don't agree are usually too lazy to speak up?

Not the gym guy but the wall guy.

WTF?

How is this a FPP?

A link to a blog about a guy coming to your town to sell his book that you don't like. You are outraged. On what possible grounds is this thing Metafilter-worthy? This is a pathetic FPP trout.

GYOBFW.

Not that I agree with Barton's positions generally, but shouldn't we want a "restrained judiciary?"

God (dios) doesn't like Trout's post.

Probably doesn't like the very close connections to His personally annointed political party either.

shouldn't we want a "restrained judiciary?

"We" do, but it has become increasingly obvious that the fundy crowd does not, they prefer activist judges who agree with their religious doctrine regardless of the law.

So when does the whole separation of church and state kick in, anyway?

And I'm sure your accusation of bias has nothing to do with your party affiliations either.

leftcoast, either my monitor calibration's way off, or does Barton's picture on the WallBuilders' site look like he's made of pink pencil erasers to you, too?

Well, I can't speak for nofundy. But I can say that I was raised, by Conservatives, to believe that Separation of Church and State -- not to mention Separation of Powers -- were pretty fundamental American principles.

At any rate, it really takes a fair degree of massaging to get the historical record to make the primary architects of our foundational American political documents look like they're trying to establish a Christian nation.

... pink pencil erasers...

It's not your monitor. Very disturbing. Looks like he's a walking case of cellulitis.

Hee. I've waited so long for someone to say that.
