America-We-Stand-As-One-Gate

Remember the video from Dennis Madalone - "America We Stand As One" first reported here? And then, of course, we were offered "America We Stand as One / F*CK Yeah!" mash-up video, frist reported here. Well, now the original artist has responded. Dennis has placed himself in the public spotlight. Does this not warrant some playful ridicule? Some might feel bad for Dennis, but others might say he has targeted himself...

What's the issue here? He's not sicking his lawyers on them with a cease-and-desist letter. He just said that he's flattered, but he'd request that one minor change be made in respect for a family that lost a child. I don't think he could have been nicer about the whole situation.

(This comment also posted almost identically at the linked blog site)

I think given the circumstances that his response was surprisingly appropriate, well-reasoned and pleasant. He didn't say "don't do it", he didn't throw a copyright hissy-fit; in fact, it sounds like he enjoyed it and he even wants to link to it.

For someone to create something so serious (to him, anyway) yet have such a relaxed sense of humor about it makes me respect him a lot more, not less. Surprisingly.

Given all that, I think if it were me I'd actually remove the baby face. When I watched the piece, I thought it was funny, but that one element (for me) detracted from it, so it would be no creative loss.

Of course, I have a bit of bias, as my sister lost a child ten days after her birth due to an unforseen complication -- so I have empathy for the parents of that child.

In short: I'd remove the baby face out of respect for the parents of the child (who didn't make the original video, after all), and then full speed ahead with the playful teasing of the video's creator, because he's obviously being a good sport about it (which is far too rare in this day and age).

Man sends heartfelt and politely worded request to the creators of the video. (Which comes down to - "Please remove this one scene because a family may find it upsetting" and those creators think that this is reason to start a pile-on. I think not. He's not even saying - "Don't target me". If anyone thinks that his request (not the excrutiatingly bad video) warrants ridicule, then they need a slap round the head.

To quote Dennis. I think you could imagine the consequences I would have to face in explaining to the family why I would make a parody video poking fun at their lost son. Im asking you to please be kind and caring on this matter, it is causing much pain in our family.
