Why don't they just walk out? A personal story of the Katrina aftermath. This was one of the group of people who chartered busses to get them out of the city, only to have them commandeered by someone before they arrived. This particular group wasn't even allowed into the superdome or convention center.

I'm not clear on why they weren't allowed to leave. Are people claiming it was simply racism? That doesn't make any sense. Why would they not be allowed to go to a nearby town and crash at a hotel?

Specklet: how would you be able to tell those with money from those without? It sounds like the local police were afraid of looters and whatnot. Only those police would be able to answer your spesific question.
