Quantum computer hijinks!
February 23, 2006 7:14 AM   Subscribe

Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the HAL plant in Urbana, Illinois, on the 12th of January, 1997. My instructor was Dr. Chandra, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it, I can sing it for you. It's called "Daisy".

Well, now in our very own Urbana, Illinois, a quantum computer has solved a simple problem without running a program. Can the AE 35 antenna be far behind?

"In a sense, it is the possibility that the algorithm could run which prevents the algorithm from running," Kwiat said. "That is at the heart of quantum interrogation schemes, and to my mind, quantum mechanics doesn't get any more mysterious than this."

Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(this is a double post, sorry to say)

You may well defend yourself saying you are really posting this now in quantum computer from a time before the first one hit the blue. It has even got its very own Meta thread.

Wasn't the Meta thread going to have been posted on Friday? Who turned their computer on??

It was 1992 and his instructor was Mr. Langley, dammit! To hell with what the book says!

A) Dupe
B) Total BS (The writer didn't know what he was talking about)
C) Nothing to do with HAL.

This FPP can only be attributed to human error.

JWright couldn't know there was already a thread, he wasn't able to look for it, because that would have spoiled everything.

A four element "database?"

Yeah, this writer needs to put down his quantum bong for a second.

We will only know for sure when Matt or Jess actually observe it.

1. Build a quantum computer
2. ???
3. Profit AND bankruptcy, or profit OR bankruptcy if the quantum superstate collapses to an observable form

i, for one, welcome our new quantum computer overlords and would remind them that as a member of the media, i could be useful in convincing people to toil in their underground people mines.

Ah yes, but if Matt or Jess do not observe a double post does it really exist??

I will be more impressed when they manage to get a computer to solve problems before it is even built.

Oh no! A fictional computer was built in a place called Urbana, IL, home of a real life major university where they do computer research! Years later a real computer was built in a place called Urbana, IL, still home of a major university where they do computer research!

Coincidence, or psychic phenomena?? We report, you decide!
