Everyone Has Everything

On NING now, you can have not just your own blog, but your own social network. I can remember back in 2000 I stopped blogging because there were just too many, but after having begun to manage profiles on a half-dozen major social networking sites, I tire of logging in to each for its own purpose. How can we get our Internet to the day where I have my ONE TRUE PROFILE which is accessible to any user from any other social network - where is the super-social network? Or, are we destined to continue on the track of fragmented communities spontaneously springing up and moving on as personalities and trends change? Am I as a user destined to wander from network to network as new networks are built with the next new feature? Or, worse yet, am I destined to maintain a stable of a dozen network profiles, each with a specific niche purpose. Come on now, that's ridiculous. The killer app for 07, 08 or 09 and beyond will be the solution to this problem.

Spam from a three-digit member? I'm stunned.

Seven years and you seem to not understand whats acceptable in a front-page post? Lots of editorializing, a self-link...
Try again in 2014?

Just struck by "roll yer own social network" on NING and the absurdity of the many, many networks with no operability. Not spamming.

Wasn't the best thing about the many and varied social networks the simple fact that you could start over very easily? Not have the same psycho's stalking your profile, ect? Or, you know, the variety?

"Wow, *and* you worked for Phillip Morris USA!!!""Mr Tabakkee Salesman" they called me.
"...start over very easily"That's a good point, but what about convincing your network of friends on network A to network B because knucklehead W is stalking you? That's gotta be a pain. Most of my friends stopped caring after Friendster.
And apologies for any deviance from the posting norm. As you can see, I'm a touch rusty. I'll carefully re-read the rules before posting ever again.

No reason you couldn't just make a new profile on super-site X.
There are a bunch of social networking, um, "binders". There are sites where you can start your own social network.
I'd like to think that we'll have an open system where anyone can link to any one else's profile, just like everyone can email eachother (but with some kind of spam control). I'm not optimistic, though, just look at instant messaging. There's to much money involved for people to play fairly with each other. Not like the old days.
Also, I agree with everyone who think this post sucks.

I've been watching Ning's metamorphosis and, guess what? It sucks just as badly as its previous incarnation. No-one running any serious forum or network will touch this with a bargepole. We'll stick with phpBB etc, because that software has been evolved over years and has a huge development community, as opposed to Ning, which keeps trying to rip off the look and feel of other software products, without any of the grassroots support.
Ning isn't a Flickr killer, or a phpBB killer, or a YouTube killer, or... well, you get it. It's a doomed-to-be-behind-the-curve wannabee.
metoo.com would be a more appropriate URL.
Wisdom is right about one thing, which is that we need portable IDs for multiple networks. Fortunately there are good solutions to this in the works.
(Of course, Ning's idea is right in a way. Combine content management, forums, photo & video management with a single logon, all state-of-the-art, and you'd have a killer app. Unfortunately only Google has the resources to actually achieve anythingn like this, and they haven't, so don't hold your breath).

Having experienced my first deletetion today, I can now say with authority that posts bound for deletion get about 1000x more comments than other posts. We all love to be the first to tell someone what a fuck up they are, don't we?
