C'mon monsters, you don't have to be cry. We can be happy!

Fascinating. They captured on film the precise moment when Michael Stipe ceased to be relevant.

Really? Michael Stipe ceased to be relevant when he made a happy song and did a silly sketch? My, you've got a narrowly defined notion of what's appropriate.

I thought the song would be nice with 'mefites' instead of 'monsters', but then I realized the kind of meaning 'furry' would get....

All of the Pitchfork-istas may be shocked to learn that my son absolutely loves this song. How is it that someone's musical taste could become corrupted so?

Well, assholes, he's 3 years old, and therefore the target market for the song. Believe it or not, a lot of people make and do things whose end purpose is not to please you. In this particular case, the end goal of the song is to educate preschoolers about expressing emotion, and about the concept of opposites, and that might actually be more important than whether or not someone is "relevant."

That said, this is a piss-poor FPP -- why not go ahead and link to something about Joe Raposo the genius behind many of the memorable Sesame Street songs that three generations of people know by heart?

Totally inane, totally silly. Any kid under 6 would probably love it, so it must be good. And how'd I ever miss that bass player? Yum!

What Alt F4 said. This works well after staying up too late for the long weekend.

Wow, lots of apologists for cack in this thread. That song is generally recognized as the beginning of the end for REM. Seeing them sing it on Sesame Street only enhances that impression. Why can't we be in favor of children learning how to express their emotions and express our own by deriding Michael Stipe as a second rate lyricist with a penchant for the insipid?

Oh, and...

Your favorite muppet sucks.

Found this myself last fall; it still makes me smile, especially the Kate Pierson-esque Muppet.
