Senate Panel Recommends Mukasey's Confirmation to the Senate. This attorney general confirmation brought to you by Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Schumer. (Newsfilter/Politicsfilter)
There are rumors of an off-the-books agreement in which the newly-minted AG will consider enforcing any laws congress might subsequently pass to make waterboarding illegal. However, committee chairman Patrick Leahy called Mukasey's promise disingenuous. "Unsaid, of course, is the fact that any such prohibition would have to be enacted over the veto of this president," Leahy remarked. Further complicating matters, apparently waterboarding is already illegal.

What a surprise. Could everyone go ahead and have a pithy conversation while I sort of cover my head with my arms and rock back and forth in the corner?

Oh thank goodness for that: a dishonorable secret agreement made by a klavern of dishonorable secretive people is sure to be kept.

Huh? Patrick Leahy called a "rumored", "off-the-books" promise disingenuous? Look, if you're gonna blog the news at least try to make sense.

"Dachau is left standing because it must be. All the Dachaus -- all the Belsens, all the Buchenwalds, all the Auschwitzes -- all of it. They must remain standing because they are a monument to a moment in time when some men decided to turn the Earth into a graveyard. Into it they shoveled all of their reason, their logic, their knowledge...but worst of all, their consciences. And the moment we forget this, the moment we cease to be haunted by its remembrance, then we become the gravediggers. Something to think about, something to dwell on and remember...not only in the Twilight Zone, but wherever men walk God's Earth."

George_Spiggot: Sorry if that seems confusing to you, but that's how it actually went down, according to these accounts.
